Miss USA 2009 – California

Miss Teen USA 2007 – South Carolina Caitlin Upton

Miss USA 2009 – California Carrie Prejean

The Miss Teen USA pageant was held on Friday night, and during the crucial question-from-the-panel segment at the end, Miss Teen South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, totally choked when she was asked why Americans are unable to locate the U.S. on a map. The poor dear rambles on about “The Iraq” and South Africa. Props to A.C. Slater, who managed not to laugh in her face, although you can tell he desperately wanted to. Ironically, as bumbling as her response was, it sort of answered the question: Because Americans are stupid! Needless to say, South Carolina did not win the title.

Miss California is not backing down from the answer regarding gay marriage she gave on Sunday night’s Miss USA telecast.

Carrie Prejean told FOXNews.com that she had “no regrets” and was happy with the answer she gave when a Miss USA judge, the gossip blogger Perez Hilton, asked about her stance on same-sex marriage.

“I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” she said on the live broadcast. “No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

One person who was offended was Keith Lewis, co-director the Miss California competition, which Prejean won to make it into the Miss USA pageant. Lewis told FOXNews.com that he was “saddened” by Prejean’s statement.

“I am personally … hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman,” said Lewis in a statement.

Co-director Shanna Moakler, best know as Travis Barker’s wife in the MTV reality show “Meet the Barkers,” said that she fully supported Lewis’ condemnation of Prejean’s views.

Blogger Perez Hilton was also enraged, calling Prejean a “stuipd b***h” in a video tirade he aired on his blog.

But the backlash is having little affect on Prejean, 21, she says.

“I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I stated an opinion that was true to myself, and that’s all I can do,” she told Billy Bush, who hosted Miss USA, on his radio talk show on Monday.

“It did cost me my crown,” Prejean continued. “It is a very touchy subject and [Hilton] is a homosexual, and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct. But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.”

“I feel like I won,” she said. “I feel like I’m the winner. I really do.”

Prejean also said that her sister, a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force, and a supporter of gay marriage, was not offended by her answer.

“She was just in my hotel room and she said, ‘Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said. We have two different opinions and I love you because of it. I love you because you stood up for what was right, and it’s not a matter of being gay or not gay, it’s a matter of you competing for Miss USA and getting a question and answering it to the best of your ability.”

Miss California’s answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show.

“It’s ugly,” said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. “I think it’s ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are.”

Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, argued back.

“In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!”

The winner, Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton, a 22-year-old aspiring motivational speaker and entertainer from Wilmington, edged out Prejean and second runner-up, Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco, of Phoenix.

Doctors to remove needles from boy

Baby with needles

A 2-year-old boy, found with 42 needles inside his body, arrives to a hospital in Salvador, northeastern Brazil, Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009. Roberto Carlos Magalhaes, the boy’s stepfather, has confessed to jabbing them into the toddler as part of a religious ritual, Brazilian police said Thursday.

Doctors have begun to perform emergency surgery on a Brazilian toddler to remove some of the 42 sewing needles that were allegedly inserted into him by his stepfather during a series of bizarre rituals.

Surgeons in the north-eastern city of Salvador plan to take out a needle that punctured the two-year-old boy’s heart and others threatening vital organs, said Susy Moreno, a spokesman at the hospital where the boy is being treated.
The operation could be followed by more surgery, she said.

Police said the boy’s stepfather confessed to pushing 42 supposedly “blessed” sewing needles deep into the child because his lover told him to while in trances. The rituals were performed over a period of a month to try to keep the couple together, the stepfather told police.

Roberto Carlos Magalhaes, a 30-year-old bricklayer, told detectives the woman would enter into trances and “command him to stick the needles in the boy’s body,” police inspector Helder Fernandes Santana said.

The lover, Angelina Ribeiro dos Santos, paid to have the needles measuring up to two inches blessed by a woman who practised the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomble, and convinced Magalhaes that inserting them into the boy would somehow allow them to be together, Santana said.

Police, however, believe Dos Santos was out for revenge on the boy’s mother, though they did not say why.
“According to his confession, he acted under influence of the woman, but it was he who stuck the needles in the boy’s body,” the inspector said.

Magalhaes and dos Santos were both arrested, though no charges have yet been filed.
Dos Santos is not believed to be a member of any religious or occult group, and authorities believe she came up with the idea of the rituals on her own, Santana said.

The lover, Angelina Ribeiro dos Santos, paid to have the needles measuring up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) blessed by a woman who practiced the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomble, and convinced Magalhaes that inserting them into the boy would somehow allow them to be together, Santana said.

One of the needles penetrated the boy’s heart, meaning he may need an emergency operation if any bleeding starts, Brazil’s Globo TV reported Friday, quoting unnamed hospital sources. The boy also had a fever brought on by a heart infection but he was conscious and in stable condition in an intensive care unit, the network said.

Officials at the hospital in the coastal city of Salvador have said previously that two needles were close to his heart, one was embedded in a lung and others were dangerously close to vital organs. They declined immediate comment on the Globo TV report, saying doctors would hold a press conference later to discuss the boy’s condition.

The boy’s mother, a maid, took him to a hospital in Ibotirama, population about 25,000, on Dec. 10, saying he was complaining of pain.

After X-rays revealed the cause, the mother told police she didn’t know how the needles got inside her son, whose name was not released because of his age.

Police and doctors concluded it would have been impossible for the boy to have ingested the needles — which have been also in his left leg and spread throughout his abdomen.

Ecstasy pills stolen

Thieves have stolen a gigantic collection of ecstasy which was gathered by an enthusiast over two decades and carefully stored in display albums, police said.

A total of 2,400 tablets – collected by a man who said he did not take them but was “fascinated by the pills’ logos”. The man in the town of Eerbeek, 90 kilometres east of Amsterdam, claims he collected the pills over two decades, keeping them in coin collecting folders. They were allegedly taken during a break-in.

The pills were worth up to 12,000 euros ($19,200) and arranged in around 10 display albums normally used for coins in the man’s home, from where they were taken.

Police warned that they included a batch of 40 white and red tablets that could be lethal if taken.

“The collector claims that it was a hobby,” police spokesman Bert Top said.

“He is not risking anything at the moment,” Mr Top said, but added that authorities were mulling the possibility of prosecuting him.

Police added that collecting ecstasy in such a fashion was prohibited.

Spokeswoman Esther Naber says police believe the man is serious but can’t be sure. She said it is not clear whether the man will be charged with a crime, given that the illegal drugs have vanished.
