Police have arrested two women at a British airport after they reportedly tried to smuggle a corpse onto a flight.

Police said the women were detained at Liverpool’s John Lennon airport “on suspicion of failing to give notification of death” of a 91-year-old man.

The BBC and other British media reported that the women placed the man, a relative of theirs, into a wheelchair and covered his face with sunglasses in a bid to get him aboard a flight to Berlin.

The women, aged 41 and 66, were detained and have been released on bail. They have not been charged and police say inquiries are continuing.

A young man will spend the next 60 days in jail after stealing a beer from a convenience store in Quebec. He stole the $3.37 beer to celebrate having just gotten out of jail.

Denis Danny Roberge, a 19-year-old repeat offender, had been convicted several time for petty theft, with his last crime landing him in jail for eight months, his lawyer said.

On febuary 19th, Roberge was released from prison and, looking to celebrate, visited the Laval store. He was caught by the store’s owner as he was about to steal the beer.

The suspect then fled the scene, with the store owner chasing him. Along the way, they came across police officers and Roberge was arrested.

On Monday, lawyers for both sides agreed 60 days in jail was the shortest possible sentence for Roberge. The sentence is longer than usual because of the teen’s prior convictions. For first-time offenders, such a small theft would likely not make it to court.

A 2-year-old boy, found with 42 needles inside his body, arrives to a hospital in Salvador, northeastern Brazil, Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009. Roberto Carlos Magalhaes, the boy’s stepfather, has confessed to jabbing them into the toddler as part of a religious ritual, Brazilian police said Thursday.

Doctors have begun to perform emergency surgery on a Brazilian toddler to remove some of the 42 sewing needles that were allegedly inserted into him by his stepfather during a series of bizarre rituals.

Surgeons in the north-eastern city of Salvador plan to take out a needle that punctured the two-year-old boy’s heart and others threatening vital organs, said Susy Moreno, a spokesman at the hospital where the boy is being treated.
The operation could be followed by more surgery, she said.

Police said the boy’s stepfather confessed to pushing 42 supposedly “blessed” sewing needles deep into the child because his lover told him to while in trances. The rituals were performed over a period of a month to try to keep the couple together, the stepfather told police.

Roberto Carlos Magalhaes, a 30-year-old bricklayer, told detectives the woman would enter into trances and “command him to stick the needles in the boy’s body,” police inspector Helder Fernandes Santana said.

The lover, Angelina Ribeiro dos Santos, paid to have the needles measuring up to two inches blessed by a woman who practised the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomble, and convinced Magalhaes that inserting them into the boy would somehow allow them to be together, Santana said.

Police, however, believe Dos Santos was out for revenge on the boy’s mother, though they did not say why.
“According to his confession, he acted under influence of the woman, but it was he who stuck the needles in the boy’s body,” the inspector said.

Magalhaes and dos Santos were both arrested, though no charges have yet been filed.
Dos Santos is not believed to be a member of any religious or occult group, and authorities believe she came up with the idea of the rituals on her own, Santana said.

Officials at the hospital in the coastal city of Salvador have said previously that two needles were close to his heart, one was embedded in a lung and others were dangerously close to vital organs. They declined immediate comment on the Globo TV report, saying doctors would hold a press conference later to discuss the boy’s condition.

The boy’s mother, a maid, took him to a hospital in Ibotirama, population about 25,000, on Dec. 10, saying he was complaining of pain.

After X-rays revealed the cause, the mother told police she didn’t know how the needles got inside her son, whose name was not released because of his age.

Police and doctors concluded it would have been impossible for the boy to have ingested the needles — which have been also in his left leg and spread throughout his abdomen.

Indian officials allowed hundreds of babies to be dropped from the roof of a mosque in the belief it would ensure good health and prosperity.

The ritual at the Baba Umer Durga, a Muslim shrine, is believed to have been followed for nearly 700 years, and each year hundreds of people, both Hindus and Muslims, take part.

Infants, most under two years old, are dangled from the roof of the shrine near Sholapur, 450km south of Mumbai, before being dropped about 15m onto a bedsheet held aloft by parents and other believers.

Television channels showed the babies screaming as they were shaken in the air before being dropped.

Officials said there had been no reports of any injuries at this year’s event.

‘Irrational’ behaviour

With high child mortality rates, especially in India’s rural areas, many people resort to rituals which they believe can ensure their children’s health.

Children’s rights activists expressed outrage after the Headlines Today television channel showed the babies being dropped.

“This shows the complete failure of the local administration to prevent this practice and to create awareness about children’s health,” said Ranjana Kumari, a civil rights activist in New Delhi.

“It is also a reflection of the lack of access to health services, that forces people to behave in this irrational manner,” Kumari said.

India’s National Commission for Protection of Child’s Rights issued a notice to the local administration in Sholapur and has begun investigations into the practice.

I don’t think access to health service for kids will help this issue; if you are stupid enough to think that dropping your few months old baby from 50 feet, causing him a whiplash and possible permanent brain injuries will ensure his health then go ahead you don’t need medical access.

Farmers in an eastern Indian state have asked their unmarried daughters to plow parched fields naked in a bid to embarrass the weather gods to bring some badly needed monsoon rain, officials said on Thursday.

Witnesses said the naked girls in Bihar state plowed the fields and chanted ancient hymns after sunset to invoke the gods. They said elderly village women helped the girls drag the plows.

“They (villagers) believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains,” Upendra Kumar, a village council official, said from Bihar’s remote Banke Bazaar town.

“This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily.”

A teenage girl who claimed 56 stars were tattooed on her on her face as she slept when she asked for three has admitted she was awake the whole time – and lied because her father was “furious”.

Kimberley Vlaminck had insisted she dozed off after asking the tattooist for just three small stars – then woke in horror to find her face was covered.

The Belgian blamed the Flemish-speaking tattooist for not being able to understand her French and English instructions.

But the 18-year-old has finally confessed she did not fall asleep, that she wanted all the stars and was “fully aware” of what Mr Toumaniantz was doing.

Ms Vlaminck told a Dutch TV crew: “I asked for 56 stars and initially adored them. But when my father saw them, he was furious. So I said I fell asleep and the that the tattooist made a mistake.”

Mr Toumaniantz – himself covered from head to foot in tattoos and piercings – had consistently denied he had made a mistake and always insisted Vlaminck wanted all 56 stars.

He said at the time: “I maintain that she absolutely agreed that I tattoo those 56 stars on the left side of her face.”

But despite insisting she had asked for 56 stars, he still initially agreed to pay for half of the treatment to remove the tattoos.

“Kimberley is unhappy and it is not my wish to have an unsatisfied client,” he said.

“I don’t regret it. To tell you the truth, this has given me some publicity.” Mr Toumanaintz is now said to have withdrawn his cash offer and said from now on he will get written consent from clients before he begins tattooing.

As for Ms Vlaminck she could always go work for STARbuck!

A Belgian teenager says she will sue a tattoo parlour which she said covered half her face with stars while she was asleep.

Kimberley Vlaeminck, 18, was left sporting 56 black stars of various sizes on the left side of her face, from nose to ear and brow to chin.

The young housewife said she had gone to the tattoo parlour in the western town of Courtrai and asked for three small stars on her face.

“I wanted him to tattoo on just three little points but he suggested three stars saying it would look prettier,” Vlaeminck told local press.

“When he started the tattooing I didn’t want to feel the pain and so I went to sleep. I had got up at five in the morning,” she said.

Kimberly thinks she must have dozed off as her face was being injected with ink contained in a huge vibrating needle held by a foreigner.

“I woke up when he was starting to tattoo my nose and I saw what he had already done. I counted 56 stars, it’s frightening,” she told the Flemish daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The young woman, who said she doesn’t dare walk down the street, has decided to sue the tattoo parlour.

She said she also hoped to have her starry appearance reversed by laser treatment, which would cost thousands of euros.

Tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz denied that his client had fallen asleep. But still agreed to pay for the laser treatment.

“She was awake the whole time, I don’t use hypnosis or drugs. She agreed to it. The problems started when her father and his friend saw the tattoos,” he told the paper.

A 10-year old’s driving services were requested by 43-year old Randy Lewis (that’s actually him in the picture, he was really wearing that shirt) and Paula Elaine Evans because they were too drunk to drive themselves. Other passengers included another 10-year old and a 6-year old. However, the driver lost control of the van at 90MPH and flipped it, before it finally came to stop on its roof.

Thankfully, all five individuals where released from the hospital with minor injuries, and Lewis and Evans (the adults could have died for all I care) both went to jail for charges ranging from child endangerment and neglect to DUI, a charge which can be levied in Tennessee even if you aren’t behind the wheel. After a performance like that, we sincerely hope nobody ever buys that dad a beer ever again.

When the authorities arrived on the scene, Lewis admitted to having consumed at least 15 beers as well as somealcohol while Miss Evans pounded down as many unidentified pills as she could before police arrested her.

Wow, making a 10-year old drive you home because you’re wasted? That’s just sad. I think we can all agree here that designated drivers should at least be 11½. You know, so they can reach the pedals.

This week someone ask me why I don’t buy anymore audio CD. Well because they sound crappy. The story goes that around 1990 the RIAA decided to implement a regulation asking audio CD to be normalized (and copy protected but that is another topic). What does that mean? It means now audio CD sound like crap and you can’t play them as loud as we used to in the 80′s. Why did they done that? Well first they are stupid, second they wanted to correct a few problems they had like having volume going up and down between songs. And they found out that normalizing song allow them to keep the same volume throught out the album and at the same time increased the gain (volume) without having the listener cranking up the volume.
